SURFnet constantly extends and improves its nationwide network infrastructure in the Netherlands, in order to connect new customers and to create new, innovative services.
SURFnet examines options to upgrade its existing Photonic Transport Network, Carrier Ethernet Network, IP Network, and related Network Management Systems. SURFnet believes network technology and networking concepts are at a turning point in approach and capabilities - which provides opportunities but comes with inherent uncertainties and challenges. Therefore SURFnet invites potential suppliers to participate in a market consultation.
In the upcoming tender SURFnet will look for – possibly multiple - partners that will deliver (parts of) the network solution. Delivery will include architectural and design advice, equipment delivery and software delivery as well as maintenance and support services for the equipment and software. Future partners are also expected to jointly innovate the network.
Through a Request for Information (RFI) process, SURFnet aims to inform parties about the upcoming tender for building blocks for the next generation SURFnet network. Also, SURFnet aims to get a better understanding of trends, innovations and developments in the relevant network technologies, and potential network features that result from these developments. Respondents are invited to provide SURFnet with an insight in their technology vision and technology roadmap: what will be the next important step in the world of high-speed networks? Are there opportunities for shared development and innovation? What would potentially be a sensible division in lots when tendering will take place?
Considering the complexity, size and diversity of the problem area, with the help of the RFI process SURFnet aims to be as well prepared as possible to define a tender in such a way that it is ambitious and pushes the envelope, and with enough potential for interested parties to define a realistic offer. The RFI process is primarily aimed at network equipment vendors and network management solution providers, but other parties are welcome to give input or to respond.
SURFnet expects to build its next generation network using a combination of “best of breed” components. Therefore, vendors who specialize in specific network elements or layers are invited to respond to SURFnet’s questions in those specific areas; it is not necessary to provide answers to all SURFnet’s questions.
SURFnet invites all interested parties to participate in the RFI process for SURFnet8 Industry Partner(s). More information about the contents and procedure of the RFI process can be found in the 'SURFnet8 RFI' document. This document can be downloaded from TenderNed.
SURFnet welcomes all serious input in response to this Request for Information, including responses that only address part of the issues described, or suggest alternatives to SURFnet’s stated vision and ideas. The deadline for submitting responses to the SURFnet8 RFI document is 30 September 2015.
